National Stress Awareness Month

Everyone gets stressed

Some get stressed more often than others. So, in light of National Stress Awareness Month, here are five simple tips to help you learn to deal with stress and manage unhealthy habits from Stress Management, a Special Health Report from Harvard Medical School.

1. Stay positive - they say "laughter is the best medicine" for a reason. It has been found to lower levels of stress hormones, reduce inflammation in the arteries and increase “good” HDL cholesterol.

2. Meditate - this practice of inward-focused thought and deep breathing has been shown to reduce blood pressure. Yoga can also relax the mind and body.

3. Exercise - when you're physically active, your body releases mood-boosting endorphins. Exercising not only melts away stress, it also gives you a healthy break from any stressors in your day.

4. Unplug - it’s impossible to escape stress when it follows you everywhere. Take some time each day to escape from the world by avoiding social media, emails and TV news.

5. Find ways to take the edge off your stress - simple things like a warm bath, listening to music or talking to friends, can give you a break from your stressors.
