Welcome to Georgetown University’s benefit showcase for open enrollment. We invite you to use this site to explore your benefit options for 2023.
Georgetown University’s open enrollment runs from October 14-November 15, 2022. During this time you can make changes to your medical, dental, vision, and voluntary insurance enrollments; make annual contribution elections for 2023 Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).
This site will be available to you on demand throughout open enrollment. You're encouraged to bookmark it and visit it whenever you or your family members need additional information.

2023 Benefit Options Showcase
Kaiser Permanente HMO Plans
Faculty and staff have two different medical plan options available through Kaiser Permanente. One is the HMO Signature plan which features copays for most covered services; the other is a High Deductible (HSA-Qualified) HMO in which you must satisfy the plan deductible before the health plan begins to cover services for a copay or coinsurance. These plans are only available to faculty and staff who reside in the DC metropolitan area.
CareFirst BlueChoice Advantage
Faculty and staff have access to a national network of providers and two different medical plan options available through CareFirst. One is a Point of Service (POS) plan which features copays for most in-network covered services; the other is a Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP), which is a high deductible plan in which you must satisfy the plan deductible before the health plan begins to cover services for a copay or coinsurance. When enrolling in CDHP, participants may choose to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) on a pre-tax basis.
Under both these plans, participants are automatically enrolled in the CVS Caremark prescription drug plan. There is no additional premium, but members receive a separate Rx ID card that they must use when filling prescriptions.
UHC Choice Plus Plan
The UnitedHealthcare (UHC) Choice Plus plan is a PPO plan that allows you to see any doctor in their network – including specialists – without a referral. United Healthcare has a national network of providers; however, you may use any licensed provider you choose.
There are two levels of coverage under the plan. Your level of coverage is determined each time you receive care, depending on whether you use a network or non-network provider. Your out-of-pocket costs under both levels of coverage may include office visit copayments, deductibles and coinsurance.
Prescription drug coverage is provided by CVS Caremark.

The Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier Program
This program combines two of Delta’s national dental networks—Delta Dental PPO and Delta Dental Premier—giving you access to dentists that participate in both. There are many advantages when you use a dentist who participates—and nationally, 3 out of 4 dentists belong to Delta Dental networks.
Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier – Standard Plan
This plan provides basic coverage for routine exams, cleanings and other basic services at an affordable premium. The plan pays up to $1000 per member each calendar year. Orthodontia is not covered. Discounts on eligible services extend after the calendar year maximum is met.
Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier – Enhanced Plan
This plan provides expanded coverage, including periodontal and prosthodontic services, up to $2,000 per member each calendar year. In addition, the plan provides up to a $2,000 lifetime maximum orthodontia benefit for dependent children up to age 19. Discounts on eligible services extend after the calendar year maximum is met.
The Aetna Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) is a managed care program offering a network of Metro DC area dentists. If you enroll in the Aetna DMO, you must select a dentist from the DMO network for all of your dental care. The DMO offers 100% coverage for all preventive care and most covered services, with a $10 copay per visit. There is no deductible and no annual maximum on benefits. Please note that dental implants are NOT covered under this plan.
Orthodontia for eligible participants is covered at 50%. Eligible participants are dependent children whose treatment begins before age 19. There is a lifetime limit on orthodontia of one time per patient.
EyeMed Vision Care Select
The EyeMed Select vision plan promotes preventive care through regular eye exams and early corrective treatment. In addition to helping you see better, routine eye exams can detect a number of serious health conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes. Eye exams for your dependent child/ren can also recognize problems that may affect their learning.
After you have paid any required copayments, the vision plan provides benefits for an eye exam and lenses once every 12 months, and frames once every 24 months. In addition, various discounts are available for elective contact lenses or other items not covered by the plan. The benefits are higher when you use a network provider. The network includes approximately 40,000 providers at 18,500 locations.

Flexible Spending Accounts
Eligible employees can choose to participate in Georgetown University’s Flexible Spending Account (FSA) programs. These are two separate flexible spending accounts that can help you save money on taxes by allowing you to pay for certain expenses with pre-tax dollars. - Health Care Flexible Spending Account (Health FSA)
- Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DC FSA)
You must specify an annual contribution amount during open enrollment each year in order to participate.
Health Savings Accounts
To contribute to an HSA, you must:
- Be enrolled in a high deductible health plan
- Not be enrolled in Medicare
- Not be enrolled in a Health Care FSA
- Make a contribution election in GMS during open enrollment for the upcoming year
A health savings account, or HSA, allows you to set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. You can contribute to an HSA only if you are enrolled in a high deductible health plan. Georgetown University offers two HSA-qualified medical plans: CareFirst CDHP and Kaiser HDHP.
For Kaiser HDHP Participants:
Each year you actively enroll in the Kaiser HSA, Georgetown University will contribute to it: $750 for individuals and $1,500 for those with dependents enrolled in their HDHP. These annual contribution amounts are made to your HSA according to pay frequency. For example, if you enroll in Employee Only coverage and are paid biweekly, GU will contribute $31.25 to your account each pay period over the course of the year. You need not contribute toward your HSA (you can specify a $0 annual election) but you must be enrolled in a Kaiser HSA and be actively at work in order to receive GU contributions.
The university does not contribute to the CareFirst HSA.
HSA Contribution Limits for 2023 - New!
Your annual contribution limit (including the amount Georgetown contributes) depends on your age and dependents enrolled in your medical plan — see below.
- $3,850 employee only
- $7,750 employee plus one or more dependents
- $1,000 additional catch-up contribution for those 55 years or older

Accident Insurance
MetLife Accident Insurance pays you cash benefits if you or a covered dependent are injured in an off-the-job accident.
Critical Illness Insurance
MetLife Critical Illness Insurance pays a cash benefit if you or a covered dependent is diagnosed with a critical illness.
Hospital Indemnity Coverage
MetLife Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a cash benefit if you or a covered dependent is hospitalized.
MetLife Legal Plans
Legal help is valuable at every stage of life. MetLife has created a plan to provide legal help for your entire family. The MetLife plan covers you, your spouse and dependents for a wide range of legal matters with no deductibles, no co-pays, no claim forms or usage limits when using a Network Attorney for a covered matter.
MetLife Legal Plans Plus Parents
The MetLife Plus Parents option covers your parents and parents-in-law for estate planning, identity theft issues, document review, and more. Once enrolled in this benefit you must keep the benefit for the plan year in which it is effective (i.e., Jan 1st - Dec 31st). You can only terminate this coverage during Open Enrollment.
Voluntary Accidental Death & Dismemberment Coverage
This valuable coverage benefits beyond your disability or life insurance for losses due to covered accidents — including while commuting, traveling by public or private transportation and during business trips. MetLife’s AD&D insurance pays you benefits if you suffer a covered accident that results in paralysis or the loss of a limb, speech, hearing or sight, third degree burn, or brain damage or coma. If you suffer a covered fatal accident, benefits will be paid to your beneficiary.
Supplemental Term Life Insurance
Georgetown University provides faculty and staff with Basic Term Life and AD&D insurance coverage in the amount of $20,000. During open enrollment, employees can choose to augment their coverage with supplemental term life insurance coverage for themselves, their spouse and/or their children.
2023 Benefit Options Showcase
GMS is where you will enroll in or make changes to your benefit selections for the upcoming year. You can make changes to your elections as many times as you like during open enrollment. The final choices that you confirm and submit will take effect on January 1, 2023.
