Coordination of Unum STD Policy with LG Health Paid Time Off Policy

Things to consider when making your decision:

  • LG Health provides short term disability (STD) accrual bank to all eligible employees.  You can view the balance of this bank in Workday/time off.
  • The voluntary Unum short term disability policy can be purchased to supplement your pay whole on medical leave for up to 12 weeks upon exhaustion of the LG Heath STD and Paid Time Off (PTO) accrual banks
  • Remember that the LG Health leave policies require that you exhaust all of your STD and all but 40 hours of your Paid Time Off (PTO) banks before you can use this policy.  This knowledge can help you decide between 14 day or 30 day elimination period.  The elimination period is the amount of time that you would need to wait before using the Unum policy.

  • If you didn't get coverage when you were first eligible, you'll have to answer health questions now.
  • If you're newly eligible you may not have to answer health questions.
  • If you already have coverage in the 30/30 EP plan, you can move to the 14/14 EP plan you will have to answer medical questions.
  • New Coverage may be subject to pre-existing conditions limitations.

Also, a reminder for birth parents, the Unum policy will cover your medical leave but not bonding leave,  Please review the LG Health Paid Parental leave for more information.

Pre-existing Conditions:

You have a pre-existing condition if:

  • you received medical treatment, medical advice, care or services including diagnostic measures, or took prescribing drugs or medicines in the 3 month just prior to your effective date of coverage and
  • the disability begins in the first 12 months after your effective date of coverage
