Human Rights Are Not Optional

Pride is for everyone

Pride Month is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of LGBTQ people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQ rights movements.

Every year, the LGBTQ community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognizing the influence LGBTQ people have had around the world and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. Pride events welcome anyone who feels like their sexual identity falls outside the mainstream – although many straight people join in, too.

LGBTQ is an acronym meaning lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. The term sometimes is extended to LGBTQIA, to include intersex and asexual groups. Queer is an umbrella term for non-straight people; intersex refers to those whose sex is not clearly defined because of genetic, hormonal or biological differences; and asexual describes those who don’t experience sexual attraction.
