Your group health insurance benefits share a major role with government sponsored health care to ensure you and your eligible dependents have access to proper care when you need it. Your group health insurance benefits build on the minimum universal standard of care provided by provincial/territorial health plans. Liberty is proud to offer all eligible employees and their eligible dependents comprehensive health coverage. This coverage includes, but is not limited to:
Your health plan includes out of country coverage, but there are restrictions. Before you travel, connect with the travel assistance helpline to understand any potential limitations. If you and/or your covered dependents are out of the country and require emergency health service or if you need to file a claim for an emergency out-of-country service, please contact the travel assistance helpline. The helpline is available 24 hours. If you are in Canada or the US call the toll-free number: 1-800-321-9998. If you are anywhere else in the world, call collect: 519-742-3287.
Please refer to your benefits booklet for greater detail.
Liberty employees enrolled in the Liberty group health plan through Equitable Life are also provided with flexible spending account dollars. These flexible spending dollars can be allocated between two types of accounts: A Heath Care Spending Account (HCSA) or a Taxable Spending Account (TSA).
The HCSA reimburses eligible medical and dental expenses that are not reimbursed by your regular benefits program and that are deemed eligible for the medical expense tax credit per Canada Revenue Agency: for example, prescription medications, paramedical services, vision care, medical equipment, dental care, etc. A complete list of HSA eligible expenses can be found at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/medical/.
The TSA provides you with greater flexibility by reimbursing eligible expenses that are not covered through the traditional Group Benefits Plan and are not eligible for the medical expenses tax credit per Canada Revenue Agency. You will be able to submit these claims through Equitable Life and receive payment through direct deposit. Any expenses reimbursed though the TSA are considered a taxable benefit and will be reported on your year-end tax form. Examples of eligible items are listed below.
If you have a single health plan with Liberty, your annual flexible spending amount will be $150. If you have family coverage, the annual amount is $300. You will be able to decide how you would like to split your funds between the two accounts: all in HCSA, all in TSA or a split between the two accounts. You will need to make an allocation every year and a survey will be sent out for you to indicate how you would like to allocate your funds. If the survey is not completed, funds will be defaulted to the HCSA.
Individuals hired after January 1 in the calendar year will have their flexible spending funds prorated based on their date of hire. Also, new hires will have their prorated funds defaulted to the HCSA during their year of hire and will be able to allocate funds between the two accounts for the first of the following calendar year after their hire date.
Any allocated and unused funds granted to either account during a calendar year will be carried over to the same account type the following calendar year only. These carried over funds, along with the current year allocation, can be used for expenses incurred during the current year. The carried over funds will be utilized first for any claims submitted and will not carry forward for subsequent years. In each calendar year, the first 90 days are considered the grace period which allows you to submit any claim expenses from the previous year.
You can submit your flexible spending claims online, through the mobile app or by mail.
Your group dental benefits plan pays for dental services by type of care, which are basic (preventative or routine care), major restorative and orthodontic services. These services include but are not limited to:
Basic Services:

Your family depends on your income for a comfortable lifestyle and for the resources necessary to make their dreams—such as college education—a reality. Like anyone, you do not like to think of the scenario where you are no longer there for your family. Fortunately, Liberty provides basic life and AD&D coverage for all regular full-time employees, at no cost to you.
Basic Life Insurance (Class 1-4)
Basic AD&D (Class 1-3)
AD&D insurance provides coverage in the event of an accident which may result in the death of an employee, the loss of limb or other severe injury, such as loss of hearing or sight.
If you are out of work due to a disabling injury or illness, disability insurance is designed to replace a portion of your income, and help you maintain your lifestyle. Benefits from a disability plan can supplement lost income to help pay expenses such as mortgage or rent payments, utility bills and other household expenses. Liberty provides both short-term and long-term disability.
Short Term Disability (STD) (Class 1 &3)
The payment of short-term disability insurance benefits begins after a specified number of days, which is referred to as the elimination/waiting period. The length of the elimination/waiting period is 7 calendar days and if approved, your STD claim will begin on day 8 of your leave.
If you are unable to work due to an eligible injury or illness, the STD benefit pays 75% of your base weekly pay up to a non-evidence maximum benefit of $1,500 per week for employees in benefits class 1 or $2,000 for employees in class 3. The benefit period for STD is a maximum of 17 weeks.
Long Term Disability (LTD) (Class 1-3)
LTD insurance helps to protect your finances when your disability continues beyond the period covered by the STD plan.
In the event you are unable to work due to a long-term illness or injury, LTD insurance provides you with 66.67% of the first $3,000 of your monthly base earnings plus 50% of the remaining base earning. The maximum non-evidence maximum is $8,700 per month.
Liberty is happy to provide employees the option of buying optional life insurance, critical illness and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance for you and your eligible dependents. Critical illness is not available to dependent children. Any additional coverage you purchase will be billed directly to you by Canada Life. These coverage options would be in addition to the coverage you have in place under Liberty’s group benefit plan with Equitable Life.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)
A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is a savings plan, registered with the Canadian federal government that you can contribute to for retirement purposes. When you contribute money to a RRSP, your funds are "tax-advantaged", meaning that they're exempt from being taxed in the year you make the contribution.
Contributions to this plan are 100% employee paid. There is no employer match. You can contribute up to annual contribution limits set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you don't reach your limit, your unused contribution room is carried forward to the next year.
You can also make contributions to a plan for your spouse.
Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)
A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a registered plan that provides a flexible way to save. You can use the account to put aside money free of tax for your goals throughout life or set up an emergency fund, to name a few uses. Since TFSA withdrawals aren't taxable, more money stays in your pocket.
Contributions to this plan are 100% employee paid. There is no employer match. You can contribute up to the annual contribution limit set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you don't reach your limit, your unused contribution room is carried forward to the next year.
The Employee Share Purchase Plan (ESPP) is an employee reward program that gives employees an opportunity to own company shares through their own contributions. It is meant to complement Liberty’s compensation and other benefit programs. As part of the program, you will receive company-matched contributions. For contributions up to $5,000 each calendar year, Liberty will match it at 20% (or up to $1,000). For contributions over $5,000 up to $10,000 each calendar year, Liberty will match it at 10% (or up to $500). The annual employee contribution maximum under the plan is $10,000, for a maximum Company match of $1,500.
The ESPP is a voluntary program available to all employees who qualify for other benefit programs. You can activate your account and enroll at any time.
Blackout Periods
A blackout period is a timeframe established by the Company during which share transactions are prohibited, typically around the time when the Company releases its quarterly reports or when there are significant events that might be perceived to impact the Liberty’s performance. Blackouts are defined in the Company Insider Trading Policy, which governs all trading activities and all employees are responsible to adhere to them.
During blackouts participants are prohibited from trading shares, increasing or decreasing contribution amounts, selling or transferring shares, and stopping participation in the Plan. However, blackouts do not interfere with regular ongoing contributions through payroll deductions established before the blackout period.
